Happy Birthday blackbee! Founded in 2012 from a research project at the University of Leipzig, we are today one of the market leaders in Retail Intelligence in eCommerce. To date, online retailers and manufacturers have recorded worldwide more than 27,000 brands and monitored 75,000 retailers using our innovative blackbee technology. With the aid of our software solution, this unmanageable volume of data is transformed into valuable business information. By this method, retailers perform over 231 million successful price updates per month on the Internet, thereby securing their competitive edge on the market.
The continuous improvement of our technology will remain a chief focus in coming years. “We have already come a long way and we will press ahead even further”, says our founder and CEO Carina Röllig. “Our goal is to maintain our position as technology leader in the market, also into the future. To this end, we will continue to develop our crawling and matching technology, as well as our analysis dashboard.”
On the occasion of our five years of existence, we look back on some of the personal milestones over those years:
#1: 26.01.2012 – The birth date of blackbee
The story of blackbee started long before its actual foundation, with a research project at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Leipzig. At that time, our founders, Dr. Hanna Köpcke and Sabine Maßmann, were faced with a huge challenge – the most error-free comparison of data from the Internet. In 2010, our founder Carina Röllig then rounded off the research team. Over a total of seven years of intensive research, the three finally developed the blackbee matching algorithm. On the basis of this unique technology, they then founded Webdata Solutions in January 2012. In the meantime, blackbee now collects huge amounts of data every day from the Internet and makes it available so that retailers and manufacturers can perform informed decisions about their prices and product lines.
#2: New blackbee office and first trade fairs in 2013
Our startup was shaped by rapid growth right from the outset and our many satisfied customers had proven us right. A new and larger company headquarters thus had to be quickly found: Which is why, in the summer of 2013, we celebrated the opening of our cozy blackbee office right in the heart of Leipzig – where, with some spatial extensions, we continue today to expand our technological lead. In March 2013, we also presented our solution for price optimisation for the first time to an international audience at Internet World in Munich. Meanwhile, interested parties can remain regularly informed and advised about the advantages and functionalities of blackbee at our stand at Internet World or dmexco in Cologne.
# 3: blackbee on Germany tour – Strategy training “market -minded” for online retailers and brand manufacturers in eCommerce
Under the motto “market-minded”, we toured Germany in 2014, together with strategy consultants Conomic, to convey the topics of pricing and market strategies specifically to online retailers and brand manufacturers. With the aim of supporting retailers and manufacturers in their quest for the correct strategy in the highly competitive field of eCommerce, we organised during 2014 one training day each in the German cities of Munich, Berlin, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf and Hamburg.
# 4: blackbee wins the eco Internet Award 2015 in the category of eCommerce
“With blackbee, information is created from data” – was the reasoning of the expert jury when we were awarded for the international market potential of blackbee with the eco Internet Award 2015. With over 800 member companies, eco is Europe’s biggest association of the Internet economy. In 2016, eco honoured the innovative solutions of outstanding companies within the digital sector for the 16th time.
#5: 2016 – We continue to convince with our innovative strengths
In 2016, we were particularly pleased with two great successes: blackbee was one of the winners of the NOAH Berlin Start-Up Stage and was also one of the finalists in Entrepreneur of the Year! At the NOAH conference in Berlin in the summer of 2016 – Europe’s largest industry event for the Internet economy – our pitch turned out to be convincing in the start-up competition. We were selected as one of the five winners by audience voting! Following from this, we then presented our business idea to an international specialist audience at NOAH London. Our winning streak then continued, as our three founders were selected as finalists in Entrepreneur of the Year 2016.
2017: Still on a growth trajectory
To ensure that blackbee continues to grow in the future, we are continually working to attract ever more satisfied customers and to make available ever more up-to-date and reliable data. We are currently working on the relaunch of the SaaS interface, which we will present for the first time at Internet World in March 2017.
